WE RIDE THE COLD
WHICH CYCLING CLOTHING SHOULD I WEAR?

The winter is not only just a great season to ride, but a good winter season is the foundation for a great spring-summer. Some cyclists follow the sun for their training, others prefer to train indoors. But if you think about it, nothing beats a workout in the fresh air. The challenge is to choose wisely as you dress for your ride. In this blog we help you to find the right bike wear for the right temperature.

THE SOLUTION

In autumn and winter, you need to be prepared for everything. It can rain, the wind can be cold, it can freeze and thaw again. The advantage of autumn and winter is that the roads are much quieter and you can continue cycling. But what do you wear when the temperatures change? In a previous article, we already explained the advantages of the layer system. In this article, we look into the question of which cycling clothing is suitable for which temperatures.

WHICH CYCLING CLOTHING FOR WHICH TEMPERATURE

25 TO 15 DEGREES

Whether it's the beginning of autumn or the end of winter, as the seasons change, you'll find that conditions change as well. Temperatures will fluctuate a bit around 14°C and chances of rain showers will increase. Protection from the weather is all the more important.

Bibtights or bib shorts at these temperatures? That is often the question. In general, shorts are fine above 10°C. If you notice that it is still cold while riding, take leg warmers with you to be on the safe side.

For your upper body, you should wear a breathable base layer and a long-sleeved shirt over that. You can also wear arm warmers, but a quality long-sleeved cycling shirt is much nicer. The Merino Six6 long-sleeved shirt is made of merino wool. This material perfectly regulates your body temperature during an autumn ride. You can also choose the Thermo Essential long sleeve shirt. A lightweight cycling shirt with the insulation of a cycling jacket. Perfect for a bike ride in colder temperatures. Both shirts can also be worn as a mid-layer if temperatures continue to drop.

15 TO 5 DEGREES

When the temperature is around 8°C, you want to stay comfortably warm on your bike. It's a bit chilly, but once you're on the bike you get warm quickly. Cycling clothing that is suitable for temperatures between 15 and 5 °C is therefore often windproof and has a water-repellent layer.

For pants, you can choose between bib shorts with leg warmers or bib tights. You have to find out for yourself what works best for you.

No matter how hot or cold it is outside, you should always wear an underlayer to wick away sweat. Put on a quality thermal jacket as well, such as the Essential Hi-Vis winter jacket. This jacket is windproof and water-repellent. This makes it the perfect entry-level jacket against the elements. Plus, this neon yellow jacket stands out in the dark. Will there be much rain? Then put on the Stormbreaker rain jacket. This windproof and waterproof rain jacket is the 2-in-1 solution for autumnal weather.

Aside from jackets, a light and compact body offers a solution in these temperatures. After warming up, it is very easy to take off the bodysuit. With the reflective elements on the Wind Body Hi-Vis you will also stand out in traffic. This makes this bodysuit the ideal extra layer on cool, dusky mornings.

5 TO -10 DEGREES

At 10°C to 0°C you can safely say you are riding in winter conditions. If there is also a cold wind, wind chill further challenges you to stay warm. In other words:we have to go all out in the bike wear department.

Cooling down is not an option in this weather. Especially with cold legs, the risk of muscle injuries is greater. So make sure that your bib tights are windproof and waterproof.

Your cycling jacket should also be windproof and able to withstand an average shower at least. Our Solid Trend thermal jacket is a prime example of such a jacket. And nicely visible as well. Since the cycling jacket is wind- and water-repellent, you don't need an additional coat. If you expect heavy rain during your ride, choose the windproof and waterproof Six6 Merino rain jacket. This jacket has a Poray 10,000 membrane. This ensures that rain stays outside and the jacket breathes well.

5 TO -10 DEGREES

There is winter and there is real winter. Die-hard cyclists get on their bikes even when the temperature is below zero. Fortunately, we have jackets and cycling shorts in our range that are also suitable for cycling in the freezing cold.

Winter cycling clothing is windproof and waterproof, has an excellent insulating layer, and must be able to breathe well. Take our Neoshell thermal clothing, for example. It was specially developed for Team Jumo-Visma riders after riding the cold and wet 2019 Giro d'Italia. The Neoshell Premium thermal jacket is therefore the ideal jacket for the high-performance rider who also rides in winter. Our Six6 Polartec Alpha thermal jacket is a favorite of Wout van Aert, which can also be found in his collection (read more about it below) and is also wind and water-resistant.

Finally, we have even developed a heated thermal jacket for deep winter. A jacket with built-in thermal panels. It sounds crazy for a cyclist, but this jacket works best when you're not moving. For example when you stop to fix your tire or wait for your cycling buddies before training.

WOUT VAN AERT COLLECTION

Gravel is Wout van Aert's not-so-secret love and that's why the Wout van Aert collab collection, which we developed together with Wout, couldn't be without a Polartec Alpha jacket and a merino cycling shirt in Wout's colors. The special Gravel bib shorts from this collection are unique long cycling shorts that are suitable for the many challenges of long rides in rough terrain. With these bib shorts you can ride comfortably down to -5 degrees.

OUR WARM BIKE WEAR

Will it rain? Will it freeze? Be sure to check the weather forecast before you start cycling, as each temperature requires different clothing. Try different sets to find out which one you like to ride in. Dress appropriately to avoid overheating or hypothermia.
